About Alitalia
Alitalia is the national flag carrier of Italy. Founded in 1946, the Italian company Alitalia made its first domestic flight on May 5,1947. The first international flight connects Rome to Oslo in July 1947 while the first intercontinental flight is made in March 1948 between Rome and Buenos Aires. In 1960, the company exceeded one million passengers carried. In the 1970s, the company increased the number of its destinations, serving in particular Japan and North America. The Alitalia fleet grew in the years 1980-1990. In 2001, the company joined the SkyTeam airline alliance.
Following a bankruptcy in 2008, a group of investors set up a “”Compagnia Aerea Italiana”” (CAI) consortium to buy Alitalia, which went bankrupt. At the end of 2014, Etihad Airways purchased a 49% stake. Since 2019, Alitalia has been under state control and assisted by the FS railway company, the Atlantia group.
The airline is particularly popular with business customers, which is not least due to the good service on board. The Pope also frequently flies with Alitalia. The frequent flyer program is called MilleMiglia. Miles can be earned with all members of the SkyTeam. They can later exchange them for a free ticket or a ticket upgrade or donate it to a charity if desired. Alitalia’s lounges are called Freccia Alata.
