About Cathay Pacific
The airline Cathay Pacific, founded in 1946, is based in Hong Kong, where the home airport and hub are located. The first flight connection was between Hong Kong and Hanghai, followed by Manila, Bangkok, Singapore and Sydney.
In the 1960s, Cathay Pacific experienced rapid growth: it bought its main competitor, the company Hong Kong Airways, in 1959, carried its millionth passenger in 1964, and opened its first international connection by serving Japan. In the 1970s, with the arrival of the very first Boeing 747s, the company expanded its flights to Europe and North America. In 1980, Cathay Pacific Airways had one of the most modern fleets on the market. In 1999, the company’s new headquarters: “Cathay Pacific City” was completed at Hong Kong Airport.
When Asia suffered from SARS lung disease in 2003 and Cathay Pacific suffered a drop in revenue due to the slump in passenger numbers, it was able to recover from the crisis like other affected airlines, even though Cathay Pacific received no government support. In 2006, she bought the Dragonair company. In 2011, it operated international flights on five continents from its hub at Hong Kong International Airport and, since 2014, launched new destinations such as Mexico, Manchester, Düsseldorf or Madrid in 2016.
In June 2020, the fleet was 152 aircraft, made up of Boeing and Airbus aircraft. The 203 destinations (including code sharing) served in 51 countries. Cathay Pacific is a member of the Oneworld Alliance, where well-known airlines such as British Airways are also represented. Cathay Pacific’s frequent flyer programs are Asia Miles and The Marco Polo Club.
Air Hong Kong (Cargo), Cathay Dragon, HK Express are other airlines owned by the company.
