China Eastern Airlines About China Eastern Airlines

China Eastern Airlines is the largest airline in China and is by no means limited to the east of the country, even if the name suggests it. The airline was launched in 1988. Nine years later, the company expanded through the purchase of China General Aviation. A cargo company was founded, China Eastern Airlines became the largest Chinese airline in 2002 when China Yunnan Airlines and China Northwest Airlines joined it.

Today, the company has a strong presence in Asia, North America and Australia. In 2004, new European and Asian destinations were offered to travelers. They have since been able to fly to London or Moscow. It was in 2007 that the lines serving Johannesburg, South Africa, and New York, the United States, were inaugurated. This new line, connecting Shanghai to New York, then became the longest non-stop flight offered by China Eastern Airlines. From 2014 to 2016, activity is flourishing and many other routes are opened. In 2020, the company is launching OTT Airlines, an airline intended to operate on Chinese territory with devices developed by the Chinese aircraft manufacturer, COMAC.

In terms of passenger numbers, the airline is the tenth largest in the world. Regional connections are particularly well developed at China Eastern Airlines. Both within the country, as well as on flights to neighboring countries, the company is number 1 in the People’s Republic. Destinations outside of Asia include Paris, Moscow, Bangkok, Melbourne and Los Angeles.

The frequent flyer program is called Eastern Miles. Rewards include free flight tickets and hotel accommodation. An expansion of the program is planned. The China Eastern Airlines logo shows a flying bird against a blue and white background.

China Eastern Airlines Seat Selection

As part of the online check-in, passengers can reserve a seat. The airline makes no statements about the allocation of comfort seats with more legroom or extra seats. You can find the latest news on the airline’s website.

China Eastern Airlines Knee Distance

Because of the airlines who want to reduce the cost of flying more passengers, knee distance is very important especially on long haul flights. The front seats and emergency exit seats are the seats with the highest knee distance. It is generally sold for a fee.

Eastern Miles Frequent Flyer Program

Eastern Miles is the bonus program of China Eastern Airlines, with which the airline pursues the goal of generating added value for its customers. As a member and frequent flyer, you can earn miles or points by flying with the airline itself or with your partner airlines. There is a particularly wide range of options and points to collect here: Eastern Airlines has around a dozen partner airlines. Miles are also credited through hotel stays – for example at the Marriott, Hyatt, Hilton and many other renowned hotels. You can actively participate in the program from the age of 12 and receive your own bonus card. Younger passengers over two years can also earn miles, which are then credited to the legal guardians, for example.

Redeem Eastern Miles

China Eastern Airlines offers three different bonus card systems to earn and redeem miles. The Silver Card is available from 40,000 miles, whereas the Gold Card is available from 80,000 miles. Frequent flyers can use the miles, among other things, to upgrade their ticket to a higher class or to return additional baggage free of charge. A stay in the VIP lounge is just as much an extras for Eastern Miles users as a prioritized and faster check-in.

China Eastern Airlines Food & Beverage

In economy, passengers can expect to be able to choose between Western and Chinese dishes when it comes to on-board catering. Food and drink is available in all booking classes at no extra charge. China Eastern does not have sample menus online, however. Special requests for meals should be registered by phone up to 24 hours before departure.

Example photos from China Eastern show Asian noodle dishes, Chinese soups and the traditional filled dumplings called Dim Sum. For the western taste, for example, lamb chops, wraps and omelets are shown. It is not clear which booking class these examples apply to. The snacks section is illustrated with salads, sweets and salty options.

Travelers report porcelain dishes and à la carte service in business and first class. In the economy, people eat from plastic trays. Alcoholic beverages should be available in all booking classes in addition to non-alcoholic standards such as coffee, tea and soft drinks.

China Eastern Airlines Inflight Entertainment

From the beginning of 2006, First Class and Business Class travellers will have access to a comprehensive programme of entertainment with the extended China Eastern Media Panel. The four options MUcinema, MUcdplayer, MUTVstation and MUshow can be individually selected via the personal screen facing each seat: the choice includes 100 video options with 30 cinema films in up to eight languages, 30 TV programmes and 17 music magazines from around the world, 170 CDs, a selection of audio books, 23 radio programmes with many international channels, games of skill, action games, board games and strategy games as well as 11 language courses.
