About SriLankan Airlines
SriLankan Airlines was founded in 1979 under the name Air Lanka in Colombo. In the first year, the airline served eight airports in Europe and Asia with two borrowed planes. Even then, 250,000 people traveled with SriLankan Airlines and booked cheap flights. Since then, the airline has seen continuous growth. In 1990, the number of destinations offered by the company rose to 26. In 1992, Air Lanka bought its first Airbus: an A320. In 1998, Air Lanka signed a 10-year partnership with the Emirates group. In 1998, Air Lanka took the name of SriLankan Airlines and continued its development. In particular, it will be the first to offer direct flights to the Maldives from London, Paris and Tokyo. In 2008, the government decided not to renew the partnership with the Emirates group.
2014 is a pivotal year for the company: it joins the Oneworld airline alliance. From 2015, it signs mass code shares to extend its air network. The company has won multiple awards, notably in 2018 at the APEX Awards and the World Travel Awards. In 2019, the government decides to put in place a five-year plan to develop the activity of the airline and make it a strategic hub in the Asia-Africa-Middle East region. The introduction of a free visa on arrival for nationals of 48 countries for 6 months is also a way to boost activity.
The frequent flyer program of SriLankan Airlines is called Fly Smiles. For miles earned, you can get free flights, upgrades, a priority check-in or more baggage allowance. Partner airlines and non-aviation companies also take part in this program. The planes of SriLankan Airlines are adorned with a red peacock.
