Born of Eurowings’ plan to introduce a new low-cost service in 1997, the German airline Germanwings became, five years later, an independent company. Germanwings made its first flight on October 27, 2002 from the Cologne-Bonn airport. Wishing to expand its fleet and network, the company signed an agreement on December 7, 2005 for the purchase of 18 Airbus A319s.In 2008, the plan to merge Germanwings, Eurowings and TUIfly into a single airline in order to compete with Air Berlin on the domestic market, and with EasyJet and Ryanair on international routes, was unsuccessful. Instead, Germanwings became an exclusive subsidiary of Lufthansa on January 1, 2009.
Like many other low-cost airlines, the airline works on the concept of no extras. For passengers, this means that they expect relatively little comfort on a flight, but the tickets are particularly cheap. However, additional services can be booked for a fee. Such extras include seat reservation, checked baggage, or food and drink on board. A train journey to the airport can also be booked as a special service. The airline recognized the advantages of the Internet early on. The website is updated and simplified regularly. The company can also be found on all social networks. The frequent flyer program is called Boomerang Club. Passengers receive one free flight for 16 flights with Germanwings.

Germanwings Classes of Service
The motto of the economy class named at Germanwings or Eurowings BASIC is “If you only want the flight, you only pay for the flight.” A piece of hand baggage can be taken along free of charge. All other services must be booked with the savings tariff. The Premium Economie tariff, the standard tariff at Germanwings, is called SMART. This includes, for example, drinks, food, checked baggage up to 23 kg and your preferred seat. The motto is “One tariff, all important services.” The comfort tariff, as the Business Class is called, includes, for example, a second item of luggage up to 23 kg that can be checked in, catering à la carte and priority check-in. BEST is advertised with “Maximum comfort at an attractive price”. Cheap flights with a surprise factor can be booked via the Germanwings or Eurowings offer Blind Booking. After the passenger has chosen one of the departure airports of Cologne-Bonn, Düsseldorf or Hanover, he selects the category as if there were sun and beach, culture, party, hiking and nature, metropolises and shopping. The passenger is then informed of the surprise destination. If you want, you can take the low-cost airline for a luxury holiday. These offers can be viewed in the Eurowings Holidays area, where cheaper packages are also available.
Germanwings offers flights at reasonable prices within Germany and to other European countries. Turnstiles include Cologne, Stuttgart, Berlin and Dortmund. In addition, the domestic route network includes destinations such as Leipzig, Munich, Rostock and Dresden. Important European destinations are London, Marseille, Corfu and Moscow. Many destinations are in the south, which makes the airline very popular with holidaymakers. Germanwings is one of the few low-cost airlines to offer connecting flights under the name Smart Connect.
The airline has a codeshare agreement with the following airlines.
|Air Canada||Brussels Airlines||United Airlines|
|All Nippon Airways||Lufthansa|
|Austrian Airlines||Swiss International Air Lines|
The company ceased operations in April 2020, in particular due to the impact of the coronavirus crisis.
Low-cost airline Germanwings passengers can check in from the online check-in page below. After clicking on the “Check in now” button, you can then check in all travelers on the booking in one go. Of course, this also includes toddlers. You can also choose a seat free of charge. The boarding pass is then created.
Are there any web check-in restrictions?
Unfortunately, the Germanwings web check-in can only be used for airline flights. If you are traveling with a partner airline, for example with a transfer connection, you must also check in with them.
Is there an app?
To make checking in for smartphone owners even easier, Germanwings provides an app for the three major operating systems iOS from Apple, Android from Google and Windows from Microsoft. Many other services such as flight status inquiries or flight bookings can be used here.
What about the luggage?
If you only have hand luggage, you can go straight to the gate. All others use the baggage drop-off counters in Germany. Only luggage can be checked in here. Even if there is a queue there is much faster progress than at a check-in counter.
Does the boarding pass have to be printed out?
After Germanwings online check-in, the passenger receives his boarding pass. He can print it out, but it is also possible to have the card sent to the smartphone or to save it there.
During which period is Germanwings online check-in possible?
Web check-in is available 72 hours to three hours before departure. If the flight starts from a German airport, you can even check in up to 30 minutes before departure.

At Germanwings, check-in at the counter usually begins two hours before and ends 30 minutes before departure. It is not possible to check in the evening before at the Lufthansa subsidiary.
Germanwings Baggage Allowance
Germanwings can carry all travel items that are needed on board and that do not pose a risk to other passengers. In addition, travel magazines and personal valuables such as wallets, jewelry, watches and cell phones as well as a laptop can be taken on board next to the hand luggage. Regarding the provisions, it should be noted that every passenger may take a piece of luggage with a maximum weight of 8 kg and dimensions of up to 55 cm x 40 cm x 23 cm on board without incurring any fees. In addition to the maximum dimensions mentioned, foldable garment bags up to 57 x 54 x 15 cm are also part of the hand luggage.
The checked baggage at Germanwings is always associated with fees, since the carrier is a so-called low-cost airline. There is generally a maximum weight limit of 23 kg. Otherwise there are additional fees. However, there is also a limitation here. A maximum of five pieces of luggage may be checked in at the counter, whereby one piece of luggage must not weigh more than 32 kg. When booking certain, expensive tariffs, a piece of luggage can also be checked in free of charge. Anyone who books baggage check-in online pays 15 euros or more via the call center. The task at the airport costs 30 euros.
The other luggage that you would like to take with Germanwings in the form of musical instruments or all kinds of sports equipment may only be checked in if it is booked online or by phone no later than 30 minutes before departure (transport depending on the available storage space). The fees vary greatly according to size and size as well as the number of pieces of luggage. Taking ski luggage up to max. 30 kg is free.

Germanwings Seat Selection
At Germanwings, all passengers can reserve a seat up to 30 minutes before departure. This is possible either during the booking or afterwards on the Internet, via smartphone app, the call center or at the airport counter. When booking online, the reservation is made in a second step by clicking on the desired seat in the seat graphic. Travelers can choose between a standard seat and an XL seat with additional legroom. In the basic tariff, Germanwings charges € 10 for a regular seat and € 18 for an XL seat. Anyone who has booked a smart flight can reserve both types of seats free of charge, passengers in the best fare are also guaranteed that a free adjacent seat offers additional space.
Germanwings Knee Distance
Because of the airlines who want to reduce the cost of flying more passengers, knee distance is very important especially on long haul flights. The front seats and emergency exit seats are the seats with the highest knee distance. It is generally sold for a fee.
Boomerang Club / Miles & More Frequent Flyer Program
The mileage program is carried out by the Boomerang Club from Eurowings. You will receive ten miles for every euro you spend. You will receive a reward ticket when you redeem 10,000 miles. You can also collect bonus miles and take advantage of discounted offers from partners from the hotel and service sectors. As a member of the Boomerang Club you will receive up-to-date information about the so-called “Miles Specials” every month. Here you are presented the top promotions of the respective month, which offer you various advantages such as discounted hotel offers and flights as well as double mileage credits.
Germanwings Food & Beverage
Germanwings bases its on-board catering on the Eurowings offer. Economy Class is roughly comparable to the Basis tariff. As with other low cost airlines, food and drink have to be paid extra on board. On the short-haul routes, for example, sandwiches for around five euros, chips and nuts for around three euros and drinks from juice to beer and wine are offered for prices between two and six euros. Long-haul flights offer the option of booking hot meals at an additional cost.
Germanwings’ Smart tariff would usually be called Premium Eco for other airlines. Depending on the duration of the flight, the flight price includes a cold snack or a warm meal, as well as a mineral water and another drink. A vegetarian option is usually available to passengers. As in all booking classes, it is not possible to pre-order special meals such as kosher, gluten or lactose-free food from Germanwings. Offers like a waffle are provided for children. The on-board bistro menu changes monthly so that frequent flyers can also get a taste of it.
The Best tariff guarantees legroom, free on-board catering and services such as priority boarding and access to lounges at Germanwings. Best is therefore comparable to the business class of other airlines. Disposable tableware is usually eaten, as in all booking classes, but the guest has the free and unlimited selection of all dishes and drinks from the on-board bistro. On the long haul there are cod fillets or chicken breasts, vegetarian ravioli with cheese filling or tofu with Indian-flavored rice.
First class and general
Neither Germanwings nor Eurowings offer a first class. The passengers of these two Lufthansa subsidiaries can adjust to a service corresponding to their booking class when it comes to on-board catering. However, if you are dependent on special meals for medical or ideological reasons, you should fortify yourself before departure or bring your own provisions.
Germanwings Inflight Entertainment
The entertainment program is available for a surcharge of EUR 3.90. The entertainment program is only free in the Best tariff on long-haul flights.
Germanwings currently does not offer WiFi in the airplane. So far, no details are known on whether the Lufthansa subsidiary wants to set up Internet connections on board its fleet or not.
