Carpatair is the second largest airline in Romania and privately owned by 51% Romanian and 49% Swiss and Swedish investors. Carpatair is based in Timisoara, its home airport is Traian Vuia Airport in the same city. Both national and continental destinations are served. The airline was founded in 1999 under the name Veg Air, flight operations started in February 1999 from Cluj. In December 1999 it was renamed Carpatair. The airline was among the first to connect with a cheap flight offered from Transylvania. Carpatair uses Fokker 70 aircraft.
In 2000, the company moved its operations to Timisoara Airport. The company quickly became competitive for flights to Eastern Europe. It was also able to quickly expand its range of destinations and expand its fleet, in particular thanks to the funds provided by Swiss investors. During the following years, it worked to consolidate its position on the Italian market by offering, for example, flights to Rome or Bari, and opened a new market in Greece by adding Athens to its destinations. In January 2014, however, airline filed for insolvency. It dissolved its air network in May of the same year and since then has devoted its time to charter flights as well as chartering for other European companies. Between 2015 and 2018, it operated flights for Adria Airways, LOT Polish Airlines, Volotea and KLM.
