On May 17, 2007, the low-cost airline AirAsia X was created by Tony Fernandes with the intention of offering flights to Australia. In September of the same year, “Semangat Sir Freddie” (“Spirit of Sir Freddie”), the airline’s first plane arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.A month later, the inaugural flight to Gold Coast took place.

The airline’s network extends to Singapore, Taiwan, China and India. In March 2009, she counted London as a new destination. Two years later, she launched her first flights to Paris. In 2011, new cities were added: Shanghai, Osaka, Djedda, Istanbul and Surat. In 2012, AirAsia X withdrew destinations from Delhi, Mumbai, Tehran, London and Paris due to high fuel prices, taxes, low travel demand or “difficult conditions”. At the same time, it offers Beijing as a new destination. In July 2013, the company raised 310 million dollars with its IPO on Bursa Malaysia. In December of the same year, the director announced the resumption of flights in Europe with the Airbus A330-300.In July 2014, CEO Azran Osman-Rani and Airbus President Fabrice Brégier signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for 50 A330-900neo aircraft. In 2017, the company announced the opening of a line to Hawaii for June.

During the flight, passengers have the choice between several classes: Economy, Business and Premium. In Premium class, meals and drinks are free unlike in Economy Class where there is no free food service. In Premium Class, 12 seats unfold into a bed; they have a universal power socket, an individual reading light, a retractable table and an adjustable head and footrest. Air Asia X has set up an area called the Quiet Zone for a quieter flight. These seats have an additional cost. On flights to Australia, a Samsung Galaxy tablet can be rented. AirAsia X offers a selection of 7 movies and 7 TV shows.
