About Air Algerie
Air Algerie was founded in 1946 as Compagnie Générale de Transports Aériens, or CGTA for short. The following year the company flew for the first time in charter traffic between Algeria and Europe. One year after the independence of Algeria in 1962, the Algerian state acquired 51% of the company’s capital. In 1970, this stake rose to 83%, and finally reached 100% in 1974, thanks to the buyback of the shares held by Air France. The Société de Travail Aérien (STA) was incorporated into Air Algeria in 1973, by decision of the State. Air Algérie became a joint stock company in 1997 and launched its first long-haul flight in 2007 with the opening of the Algiers-Montreal line.
Air Algérie is part of the Arab Air Carriers Organization, SkyTeam membership is also planned. In addition to the home airport of Algiers-Houari Boumedienne, Oran-Es Senia Airport is also a hub. From here, the airline serves both national and international destinations.
The airline’s relatively large fleet consists of aircraft of various types, which come from the manufacturers Boeing and Airbus. The machines have an average age of around 12.4 years. To date, the company is still completely state-owned. The airline has code sharing agreements with other major airlines. This means that the same flight is used by two airlines with two different flight numbers. The airline’s frequent flyer program is called Air Algerie Plus, so passengers can benefit from various discounts. For example, children under the age of one who do not use their own seat only pay 10 percent of the normal ticket price. Young children up to the age of 11 can receive a 25 to 33 percent discount, depending on the route. Air Algérie also offers discounts for fellow travelers, students or groups.
