The airline Bahamasair, based in Nassau, is the most dominant airline in the Bahamas, it offers a rather small network of national and international flights from its home airport Nassau. First the airline Bahamas Airways Ltd. was established in the Bahamas in 1936, which bought the British company BOAC with the participation of the Swire Group. For internal reasons, the Swire Group sold Bahamas Airways Ltd. after a short time again. At that time there were also the Bahamian airlines Flamingo Airways and Out Island Airways. The Bahamas government began operations on June 7, 1973, by acquisition of the activities of the operations of Flamingo Airlines and Out Island Airways. After some organizational changes, the airline renamed Bahamasair, the airline’s name still today.
After some initial difficulties, with which the Bahamasair had to struggle, things quickly improved with the purchase of a new Boeing 737, which gave it an important place in the Bahamas air market. With the purchase of two new Boeing 727 aircraft in 1989, Bahamasair gained further prominence. In the 90s, the company focused on its fleet. Thus, in 1991, it replaced its fleet of Boeing 737s with De Havilland DHC-8s. Six years later, it will reintroduce Boeing 737s into its fleet. In 2016, it will also acquire 5 ATRs to replace its Dash 8. Today, airline offers regular flights to twelve domestic destinations as well as regular service to eleven international destinations.
