About Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur was founded in 1857 on the site of a camp of Chinese tin miners. From 1880 to 1978, Kuala Lumpur was the capital of the principality of Selangor. In the 1930s, 110 thousand people already lived in the city. From 1946 to 1957, Kuala Lumpur became the main city and administrative center of the English colony. With the establishment of independence in 1957, Kuala Lumpur acquires the status of the capital of the Federation of Malaya, and since 1983 - the capital of the state of Malaysia.

Kuala Lumpur (or simply “Kay-El”, as locals call it), the capital of Malaysia, is located in the south-west of the Malacca Peninsula, in a low mountain valley at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers. A walk around the city should start from the very center, at the oldest Masjid Jamek mosque, which is located at the intersection of two rivers, the place of origin of Kuala Lumpur.

Today's Kuala Lumpur is one of the most dynamically developing cities in Southeast Asia. Near Kuala Lumpur, coal mining takes place. In the city there are many large banks, stock (since 1978) and commodity (since 1980) stock exchanges, boards of the most important state organizations, offices of various firms and enterprises. Tourism is an important source of income for the city. In Kuala Lumpur, there are many tourist facilities: the National Museum, the National Mosque, 5 nature parks of various orientations, religious buildings (pagodas, mosques, temples, churches). Not so long ago, the buildings of the modern period, such as the television tower and the famous twin towers of Petronas Twin Towers, fit into the look of the city.

The city has two universities ("Malaya" and Technological), various research institutions, some of which are unique - the Institute of Natural Rubber or the Institute of Tropical Medicine. In Kuala Lumpur there are also many objects of culture and art: museums, art galleries, centers of folk crafts. Among the major sports facilities there are the Bukit Jalil sports complex with a stadium for 100 thousand seats (1998), the Merdeka stadium (1957, 50 thousand seats), and the hockey stadium named after them. Tun Razak (1982, 13 thousand seats), the Palace of Sports "Negara" (1957, 20 thousand seats), etc.
