About Bangkok
Bangkok is one of the largest and most important cities in Southeast Asia, the capital, as well as the cultural and economic center of Thailand with a population of 8.3 million people (2010). The city is located on the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River, practically on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand. Fast growing and developing Bangkok plays an important role in the economy of both the country and the region. It is an independent Thai province and one of the two where the governors are chosen by the residents themselves. The district of the capital and the five neighboring provinces (Nontaburi, Samut Prakan, Pathumthani, Samut Sakon and Nakhonpatom) form the agglomeration of Greater Bangkok.
The real borders of Bangkok were approved in 1972, when the city, one might say, swallowed the province of Thonburi. The area of Bangkok is 1,568.7 km². Numerous branches in the mouth of the Chao Phrai River (Chao Phraya) flowing through Bangkok, as well as channels dug in the 19. century provided the city with the nickname “Venice of the East”. The height of the coastal city is only 2 meters above sea level, which causes serious problems in the rainy season.
The city is one of the main tourist centers of the region, which is visited by a huge number of tourists from many countries of the world, primarily from Western Europe and ASEAN members countries. Bangkok is able to satisfy the most demanding tastes: those who are interested in the unfamiliar mysterious culture of the East, and those who are in the first place chasing after entertainment. The city has several hundred hotels of various levels, so not the most wealthy people can afford to rest here.
