About TAP Portugal
Founded in March 1945, the Portuguese airline TAP Portugal (Transportes Aéreos Portugueses) made its first commercial flight from Lisbon to Madrid in 1946. In 1953, the company was privatized. The 1960s saw the advent of the jet engine: the company adapted and acquired three Caravelle VI-Rs. The first was delivered in 1962. As early as 1967, TAP Portugal was the first company to fly exclusively with jets.In the early 1970s, it operated its first transatlantic flights and served New York and Boston. Nationalized in 1975, the company continued to expand and received its first Airbuses. In 1989, it served Newark, then Berlin and carried more than 3 million passengers during 1990. At the end of the decade, it served Macao and Bangkok.
The company extended its network and joined Star Alliance in 2005. In 2006, TAP Portugal bought the Portuguese regional company Portugalia. The airline rebranded as Tap Express in 2016. On the strength of numerous awards granted in the years that followed, 2016 was the year in which the company had a makeover. It has in fact started to renew its medium and long-haul fleet. It is also the first company to receive and use an A330 Neo, during 2018.
The airline’s fleet consists primarily of Airbuses. A renewal of the medium-haul fleet is planned for the near future in order to offer passengers more comfort and to protect the environment with economical aircraft. The frequent flyer program is called TAP Miles&Go. TAP Portugal was recognized for its contribution to the development of tourism in Portugal at the World Travel Market trade fair.
