About Southwest Airlines
The American Southwest Airlines is an airline based in Dallas, Texas and the largest airline in the world based on the number of passengers. The company Southwest Airlines was founded in March 1967 as Air Southwest Inc. by Herbert D. Kelleher and the Texan Rollin King. It was renamed Southwest Airlines in March 1971. Flight operations began on June 18, 1971 between Dallas, Houston and San Antonio with three Boeing 737-200s. The home airport of Southwest Airlines has been Dallas Love Field Airport in Dallas, Texas since 1971. The airline only flew to cities within Texas until 1978, one year later, from 1979, the flight operations then expanded to include Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma.
Southwest Airlines is gradually expanding its airline network, notably through the acquisition of Morris Air and ATA Airlines in the 1980s. Composed of 753 aircraft, the American company has the largest fleet in the world of Boeing 737. Since 1994, the company has been included in the list of the 10 most admired companies in the world according to Fortune magazine .
Southwest Airlines is a good choice for vacationers who want to travel cheaply, book cheap flights and do without luxury. The airline is currently the largest in the inexpensive segment and a pioneer here. The concept of Southwest is so successful that some airlines like Ryanair and Easyjet, which allow cheap flights, are also working on it. To date, the company flies exclusively with the Boeing 737 and maintains the world’s largest Boeing fleet. The airline flies to around 70 different destinations within the USA. Among other things, passengers can benefit from the Rapid Rewards frequent flyer program.

Operating only domestic flights, Southwest Airlines is now one of the main US air carriers with more than 3,200 flights per day and more than 101 million passengers per year.
Southwest Airlines Check-in
The airline enables online check-in from 24 hours before take-off. For this, customers only need the number of the booking confirmation. You then have to print out the boarding pass yourself. Smartphone owners use the Southwest Airlines app for check-in, including a mobile boarding pass. Southwest also offers EarlyBird check-in for US $ 12.50, which automatically checks in customers 36 hours before departure. You can have your boarding pass printed out at the ticket counter or at the airport machine.

For check-in at the counter, Southwest Airlines advises customers to be at the airport at least 90-120 minutes before departure. Most airports also have self-check-in machines.
Southwest Airlines Baggage Allowance
Each flight passenger is allowed to carry one piece of hand luggage with a maximum size of 25.4 x 40.64 x 60.96 centimeters as well as one personal item (e.g. camera or laptop). When traveling by air with children, a buggy or child seat can also be taken free of charge. Each passenger is allowed to carry a maximum of two pieces of luggage, with all additional pieces of luggage costing US $ 75 each. The maximum permitted weight is 22.6 kilograms and the maximum permitted size is 158 centimeters per piece.
Golf and ski equipment is transported free of charge in addition to checked baggage. Other sports baggage can be checked in instead of the normal free baggage allowance as long as it does not exceed the maximum weight of 22 kilograms and the maximum dimensions of 157 centimeters. A separate seat can be booked for larger instruments. Further information on special baggage and baggage regulations can be found on the airline website.

Southwest Airlines Seat Selection
Seats are free on Southwest Airlines flights. When you get on the plane, you can take a seat wherever you want. It is not possible to reserve a seat. A boarding number is assigned to each passenger at check-in. The rule here: those who check in early can be one of the first to board the aircraft. On the day of departure, customers have the opportunity to purchase one of the first 15 boarding numbers at the airport counter for 40 US dollars and thus secure a seat of their choice.
Southwest Airlines Knee Distance
Because of the airlines who want to reduce the cost of flying more passengers, knee distance is very important especially on long haul flights. The front seats and emergency exit seats are the seats with the highest knee distance. It is generally sold for a fee.
Rapid Rewards Frequent Flyer Program
The frequent flyer program Rapid Rewards of Southwest Airlines has existed since 1987. In the beginning it was still known as “The Company Club”. The program was renamed in 1996. By participating in the program, passengers have a wide range of opportunities to collect airline miles and flight routes. In addition, tickets for certain events can be booked through the frequent flyer program. Many well-known companies and large international hotel chains are partners in the frequent flyer program. Participants can also have a Visa credit card issued.
Entry requirements for the frequent flyer program
Rapid Rewards has a total of three membership levels. In order to achieve “A-List” status, passengers must have flown at least 25 times or accumulated 35,000 points within a year. With the “A-List Preferred” membership level, customers receive additional benefits, for example free WiFi access on board. The level can be reached with 70,000 collected points or 50 flights per year. The highest membership level is the “Companion Pass”, which gives passengers a free ticket for one additional person for each flight. Customers reach this level after 100 flights or with 110,000 miles. Miles earned once are not transferable with Rapid Rewards. They only expire if the customer does not take a flight with Southwest Airlines within 24 months.
Southwest Airlines Food & Beverage
If you booked a flight through Southwest Airlines, you will have to pay extra for meals. Since Southwest Airlines is a low-cost airline, the company is trying to save on this point. This is the only way to guarantee consistently low airfares. On board you can choose your menu from a boarding pass. This includes cold and warm dishes, as well as snacks for in between.
The cold dishes include, for example, different sandwich variations. Soups, lasagna or warm baguettes are offered as warm dishes. Snacks include chips, candy bars, chewing gum, and peanuts. The drinks must also be paid for separately. You can choose from Cola, Fanta, Sprite, Tea or Coffee. The food and drinks are served with plastic dishes, which are quickly removed by the flight crew after they have been eaten. Please note that the catering offer may vary depending on the flight duration and route.
