Qantas is the oldest airline in the world after KLM and the largest in Australia. Founded in 1920 as the Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services by four World War I veterans, its maiden flight took place six years later. The name Qantas is short for Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Limited.
In 1934, it joined forces with Britain’s Imperial Airways to become Qantas Empire Airways. Ten years later, the “Kangaroo Route” which connects Sydney to London via Karachi is set up. At the end of World War II, the company was nationalized and the shares of Britain’s Imperial Airways were bought by the Australian state. In 1958, Qantas was one of the only companies in the world to operate intercontinental flights. It is also a pioneer in its on-board comfort offer: in 1979, it introduced Business class for the first time. In 1993, Qantas was privatized. British Airways becomes a major shareholder with the buyback of 25% of the company’s shares. Some five years later, Qantas founded the Oneworld alliance with four other airlines.
The fleet consists of Boeings and Airbusses. The frequent flyer program is called Qantas Frequent Flyer. Instead of miles, points are collected that can be used for free flights and upgrades, but also for shopping in the Qantas frequent flyer shop. Points are also earned from all oneworld members such as Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines. The Qantas Airways logo is a kangaroo, which earned the aircraft the nickname flying kangaroos.
Currently, Qantas also has a number of subsidiaries and one of them is Jetstar, which serves low cost flights. The other is QantasLink, which operates in some main line and regional centers within Australia.

Qantas Classes of Service
Depending on the aircraft, there are up to four on-board classes: Economy, Premium Economy, Business and First Class.
National and international flights are on offer. The domestic route network is very dense and well developed, and is concentrated in inland coastal cities such as Brisbane, Perth, Canberra and Darwin and Alice Springs. These flight connections are very important because, given the enormous size of Australia, they are often the only way to get from one city to the next.
In addition, many Asian metropolises such as Singapore, Bangkok and Shanghai are served. North America is also an important destination with cities like New York and Los Angeles. There are currently 27 destinations in Europe, including Flights to London, Paris, Madrid, Oslo and Frankfurt.

Qantas Airways offers passengers the option of checking in at the airport counter, check-in machines, online or by mobile phone. The exact check-in times vary depending on the departure airport and can be found on the airline’s website.
Checking in with Qantas Airways is more than easy. All you have to do is enter your booking number and surname in the online form. Anyone who flies regularly with Qantas Airways can do the whole thing through their booking manager. After entering the relevant data, all flight information is displayed. Now all you have to do is follow the five simple steps given to create your boarding pass. Those who prefer to have their boarding pass on their mobile phone can use mobile check-in. However, this is only possible for domestic Australian flights. Even if you have already checked in, it is important to arrive at the departure airport in good time. No later than 30 minutes before domestic flights, 90 minutes before international flights the baggage must be checked in.
Online check-in with Qantas Airways is not possible on the following connecting flights:

- With code-sharing partners
Online check-in is currently only possible in English. The airline is working on being able to offer these services in other languages soon.
When can Qantas Airways Online Check-in be used?
The Australian airline would like to point out that it is important to observe the specified time window for Qantas Airways online check-in . Check-in can be used via the Internet on national and international routes. Check in on time:
- 24 hours before the flight at the earliest
- at least 2 hours before departure for international flights
- at least 30 minutes before departure for domestic flights

Qantas passengers can check-in directly by visiting the Qantas counter at the airport. For international flights, passengers can check-in from 2 hours before departure to 90 minutes before departure time. As for domestic flights, passengers can check-in from 2 hours before departure to 30 minutes before departure. The check-in machines at the airport also allow you to check-in for the return flight on the same day or to rebook to an earlier flight.
Qantas Baggage Allowance
On domestic Australian flights, you can take a maximum of two pieces of hand luggage, each no larger than 105 centimeters and no heavier than seven kilograms per item. If you take a bag up to 115 centimeters with you, only one piece of hand luggage may be carried. If you take a travel bag up to 105 centimeters in size, you can also add a garment bag (up to 185 centimeters). Those who fly in the Dash 8 Services are only allowed to take one piece of luggage that is a maximum of 105 centimeters and seven kilograms. On international flights, each passenger can take two by 115 centimeters with them and each piece of luggage may weigh a maximum of seven kilograms. Except in Economy Class, where only one piece of hand luggage is allowed (e.g. bag up to 105 centimeters and a garment bag).
On domestic flights
In Economy Class, one piece of luggage weighing a maximum of 23 kilograms is allowed. Qantas Club Members and Silver Qantas Frequent Flyers are allowed to carry 32 kilograms in this class. In Business Class, as Gold Qantas Frequent Flyer and as Platinum / Platinum One Qantas Frequent Flyer, two pieces of luggage weighing 32 kilograms can be carried.
Those flying to / from Lord Howe Island are only allowed to bring one piece of luggage weighing a maximum of 14 kilograms. It is 16 kilograms from / to Olympic Dam. On flights to / from Mount Hotham, a maximum of 23 kilograms of luggage may be carried, including ski equipment. The maximum size of a piece of luggage must not exceed 140 centimeters. Children cannot take baggage allowance on domestic Australian flights.
On flights to / from America
Economy and Premium Economy travelers are allowed to carry two pieces of luggage, each weighing a maximum of 23 kilograms. For passengers traveling in Business and First Class, up to 3 pieces of luggage weighing a maximum of 32 kg per piece are allowed. The same amounts apply in this class for Qantas Club members and for Silver and Gold Qantas frequent flyers. The maximum size of a piece of luggage is 158 centimeters. Small children are allowed to check in a maximum of ten kilograms of luggage on these routes, which must not exceed the maximum external dimensions of 115 centimeters.
On all other international flights
30 kilograms can be carried in Economy Class (except between Singapore and Narita or Haneda, there it is two times 23 kg and between Singapore and Helsinki it is one time 23 kg). 40 kilograms can be carried in the Premium Economy. Business Class travelers are also allowed to take 40 kilograms with them, with the exception of flights between Singapore and Narita or Haneda (three times 32 kg) and flights between Singapore and Helsinki (two times 23 kg). You can take 50 kilograms with you in First Class.
For Qantas Club Members and Silver Qantas Frequent Flyers it is always 42 kilograms in Economy, 52 kilograms in Premium Economy and Business and 62 kilograms in First Class. For Gold Qantas Frequent Flyers it is 46 kilograms in economy, 56 kilograms in premium economy and business and 66 kilograms in first class. If you are a Platinum / Platinum One Qantas Frequent Flyers member, you can take 50 kilograms of baggage with you if you are flying in Economy Class, 60 kilograms if you are flying in Premium Economy or Business Class and 70 kilograms, when flying in First Class. Small children are allowed to bring ten kilograms of luggage.
If a musical instrument weighs no more than seven kilograms, it can be taken as hand luggage. Sports equipment can be carried within the free baggage allowance, if it exceeds this, fees apply. For further information and any exceptions, the airline’s website should be called up.

Qantas Seat Selection
With Qantas, seat reservations are free of charge on domestic flights and for passengers in First, Business or Premium Economy Class and Qantas Club members. For all other routes and passengers, booking a specific seat costs the equivalent of 17.30 euros (AUD 25). Emergency exit spaces with additional legroom are available for the equivalent of 31 euros. All seats can be reserved from the time the flight is booked up to three hours before departure. Qantas passengers who do not want to use this service can choose one of the remaining seats during check-in free of charge.
Qantas Knee Distance
Because of the airlines who want to reduce the cost of flying more passengers, knee distance is very important especially on long haul flights. The front seats and emergency exit seats are the seats with the highest knee distance. It is generally sold for a fee.
Qantas Frequent Flyer Frequent Flyer Program
The frequent flyer program of the Australian airline Qantas is based on a points system, in which the participants can collect points in various ways and advance within a five-tier membership. Newcomers to the so-called Qantas Airways Frequent Flyer system start with bronze status and as the number of points increases they get into the member areas of Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum One. Participants in the Qantas Airways Frequent Flyer program can find out their respective points status on the airline’s official website. The airline also informs frequent flyers of the current number of points via email.
Collect points and secure benefits
Participants in the frequent flyer program Qantas Airways Frequent Flyer collect the coveted points on flights with Qantas or one of the almost 30 cooperating airlines (including the partners of Qantas within the Oneworld alliance). There are many points, especially when booking flights in First or Business Class. In addition to flights, frequent flyers can also receive points when shopping and paying with cooperating companies with the Qantas Airways Frequent Flyer offer. In total, more than 400 partners in the areas of hotels, shops, car rentals and restaurants participate in Qantas’ Vieflieger program. Above a certain number of points, Qantas Airways Frequent Flyer users receive discounts, prices or upgrades for their next flight, among other things.
Qantas Food & Beverage
Even in the economy, Qantas Airways has moved away from the usual tablets. Instead of pre-portioning, passengers are initially left to choose themselves. Lamb ragout, honey-glazed chicken breast, riverina feta with roasted potatoes or an Indian-inspired curry are among the classics on offer. Snacks and drinks – both with and without alcohol – are available for the entire duration of the flight in Economy at no extra charge. For flights from Australia, the individual menu can be ordered online in advance. Service such as vegetarian options or children’s meals are offered. For more than 20 years, Qantas Airways has been cooperating with the catering company Rockpool and its founder Neil Perry, a proven gourmet, for on-board catering.
In the Premium Economy you will be welcomed with a glass of champagne at Qantas Airways and you can eat from china. For flights with the Airbus 380, a bar with snacks is always available for self-service. Otherwise, the principle of individual meals also applies in the Premium Economy, selected from tried and tested dishes that include meat, poultry and vegetarian variations. Drinks are served at any time on request.
In business, you can dine at Qantas Airways at your chosen time and choose from schnitzel to a light cheese sandwich from an extensive menu. Of course, the lounge in the A380 is also open to you. Selected wines, often from Australia, should complete the enjoyment.
Finally, in First Class, Qantas Airways is advertising as an alternative to choosing à la carte with an eight-course tasting menu and staff trained in sommelier service. In addition to wines, beer and soft drinks, champagne is also offered here. As in business, it is also possible to choose breakfast individually before going to sleep.
Qantas Inflight Entertainment
On its international flights, Qantas Airways Economy Class is equipped with comfortable seats and plenty of snacks are available throughout the flight. To relax, a wide choice of entertainment is offered on individual screens. Premium Economy class emphasizes space and comfort with reclining seats and the provision of noise-canceling headphones. In Business class, travelers have a private area with a seat that converts into a bed or a compartment to store their personal effects. Finally, First Class offers maximum comfort with bunk beds, gourmet meals and a choice of 60 films and nearly 200 television programs.
The Australian airline equipped its Airbus A380 aircraft with WiFi in spring 2012. Shortly afterwards, Qantas discontinued internet service on board. The reason for this was a lack of interest from the passengers. Only five percent of the passengers used the WLAN. Customers can obtain the latest information on this from the airline’s website.
