LATAM Chile About LATAM Chile

LATAM Chile was founded in 1929 by Arturo Merino Benitez, then commander of the Chilean Air Force. It began operating the same year under the name Linea Aeropostal Santiago-Arica. It did not take its final name of LAN Airlines until 1932. In September 1989, the Chilean government privatized the company by selling its shares to various investors, in particular the Scandinavian company SAS. In 1997, it entered the New York Stock Exchange. The company, one of the largest in South America, serves more than 50 destinations around the world. It has numerous codeshare agreements, notably with American Airlines for American destinations and British Airways and Iberia for European destinations.

However, it plans to continue its development since 32 Boeing 787s were ordered during 2007. LATAM Airlines has been a member of the Oneworld alliance since 2000. In 2012, LAN Chile merged with TAM Airlines and became LATAM Airlines. In September 2019, LATAM announced its intention to leave the oneworld alliance.

With its offer, LAN Airlines wants to bring air travelers closer to the continent of South America and therefore offers the South America AirPass. This program allows passengers to combine flights between destinations in South America at extremely low prices. A particularly dense network of routes exists along the Andes. The company also has a frequent flyer program called Latampass.
