Icelandair About Icelandair

When it was founded in 1937, the Icelandair company, then called Flugfélag Akureyrar, set up its base in Akureyri, on the north coast of Iceland. In 1943, the company’s headquarters moved to Reykjavik and changed its name to Flugfélag Islands. A year later, in 1944, three Icelandic pilots created a competing company, Loftle. Flugfélag and Loftleidir both operating internationally, they decided to merge in 1973; from this merger the company Flugleidir was born, renamed Icelandair in October 1979. In the 1980s and 1990s, the fleet was gradually renewed, with the group investing in Boeing 757-200 and 737-400 aircraft. It was during the year 2003 that the company will completely transform and flourish in tourism, transporting many tourists and businessmen. In 2005, the group took the name of FL Group and changes were made within it; The result is the division of its acquisitions into sub-groups, including Icelandair Group. The following year, Icelandair Group was sold and entered the Reykjavik Stock Exchange. Today, the company is renowned for being very dynamic, reliable and practical while being safe.

The airline is not a member of an aviation association, but cooperates with some airlines such as Alaska Airlines in order to offer customers cheap connections. The fleet consists of Boeing’s, all bearing the names of Icelandic volcanoes, which shows Icelandair’s affinity with home.

The frequent flyer program is called the Saga Club and offers rewards such as free flights, ticket upgrades, a trip with a rental car, hotel accommodation or shopping in the Saga Shop. Before the flight you can relax in the Saga Lounge. Icelandair is one of the most punctual airlines in Europe.
