About Gulf Air
Gulf Air is Bahrain’s flag carrier airline. The foundation dates back to the 1940s. It is one of the first commercial airlines in the Middle East. The Gulf Air airline was founded in March 1950 by Freddie Bosworth under the name Gulf Aviation. In 1973, the governments of the Kingdom of Bahrain, the State of Qatar, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the Sultanate of Oman bought the company. On January 1, 1974, the final treaty was signed which grants each of the parties 25% of the company’s shares. In 1975, the latter developed its network of destinations and its fleet. In 1981, Gulf Air became a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and in 1982 it was the first company authorized to land in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In 1990, it was the first Arab company to serve Australia. 2004 was a prosperous year for Gulf Air: it carried 7.5 million passengers, its record, and achieved its best economic performance since 1997. Following the withdrawal of Qatar in 2000, then Abu Dhabi in 2006, which wanted to launch their own companies, Gulf Air becomes the national airline of the Kingdom of Bahrain. The 2010s marked the beginning of a restructuring of the company. The opening of new routes, renewal of the fleet and the installation of a new type of cabin will boost Gulf Air’s activity.
The fleet mainly consists of Airbuses. A change has occurred in the on-board classes: Instead of the former three, there will be only two classes from mid-2010: the Economy Class and the Falcon Gold Class. The Falcon Gold Class corresponds to the First Class, but its price is based on the Business Class. The name is based on the golden hawks in the company’s logo. Falcon Gold Class passengers expect plenty of space and comfort. The equipment includes reclining seats, pillows and blankets are also available. A very special service awaits parents: the so-called Sky Nanny. This is a nanny who takes care of the little guests on board. Gulf Air also has a frequent flyer program that includes free flights and ticket upgrades. The lounges are called Falcon Gold Lounges and are located in Bahrain and Dubai. They are luxuriously equipped. Gulf Air sponsors various events such as the Bahrain Grand Prix in Formula 1.
