Great Lakes Airlines About Great Lakes Airlines

Great Lakes Airlines was a regional US airline that served 34 destinations in 10 different states. Founded in April 1977 by Doug Voss and Ivan Simpson, Spirit Lake Airways offered, among other things, flying lessons and maintenance operations. Two years later, Great Lakes Aviation, formerly Spirit Lake Airways, had officially become a corporation. The company’s desire for expansion was revealed in August 1985, when it secured a landing slot for Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. Soon after, she joined the Essential Air Service Routes program, in which the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) subsidizes airlines connecting underserved and therefore unprofitable cities.

In association with United Airlines, Great Lakes Aviation inaugurated in 1992, United Express Carrier, an express transport service. In May 1999, Great Lakes Aviation signed a lease with Cheyenne Airport, to facilitate connections between Spencer, Iowa and Cheyenne, Wyoming, and completed its installation in 2000. Great Lakes Aviation changed its name in 2001 to become Great Lakes Airlines in order to free itself from United Express. At the same time, it had signed a codeshare with United Airlines and then Frontier Airlines. It partnered with US Airways in 2008 and with American Airlines in 2011 to establish an interline agreement for e-tickets using a single combined electronic ticket. It ceased its activities in 2018.
