Finnair About Finnair

The Finnair company was founded in 1923 under the name of Aero O / Y. The same year, an agreement was made with the company Junkers, which provided Aero with planes and technical maintenance in exchange for a 50% stake in the new company. The inaugural flight took place in 1923, between Helsinki and Tallinn. After having experienced difficult times during the Second World War, in 1946 the Finnish government bought shares in the company and became the main owner. In 1947, Aero began to serve Europe. In 1953, Aero was renamed Finnair, short for Finnish Airlines. May 1969 marked the opening of its first transatlantic link to New York. Still in this avant-garde spirit, it is the first European company to serve China with a non-stop flight to Beijing in 1988. In 1999, it joined the Oneworld alliance and then continued to expand its scope.

The fleet consists of 72 aircraft (as of January 2020), 60 of them from Airbus and twelve from Embraer. The aircraft are painted white with large, blue Finnair lettering. The tail is adorned with a blue, curved “F”.

There is usually an economy and a business class on long-haul flights, while often only one class is offered on short-haul flights. A free meal is served on all flights. In the new airbuses, each passenger has their own entertainment system, i.e. he can watch films or play video games on his personal monitor. To pass the time, you can also read the on-board magazine Blue Wings and many other newspapers. Toys for children are also provided. The frequent flyer program is called Finnair Plus. Miles can also be earned from all oneworld members. Rewards include Free flights, ticket upgrades or a purchase in the PlusShop. In addition to its important position in aviation, Finnair also plays a leading role in the IT area.

Finnair Classes of Service

At Finnair, passengers can choose between economy and business class. Within the classes, a differentiation is made between the route lengths in terms of offers and service. For flights within Europe and to the Middle East, passengers can order food in the Sky Bistro or pre-order a meal before the flight. Seats with 7.5 cm more legroom can also be booked. Only drinks are served during domestic Finnish flights (exception: towards Northern Finland). On intercontinental flights from Finnair, meals are included in the price, blankets and pillows are provided and there are USB ports and sockets. For non-Finnish flights that go as far as the Middle East, business class customers benefit from the express service for check-in, boarding and security control. Access to the lounge is enticing on the ground, and the first-class food selection is in the air. On long-haul flights from Finnair, the comfortable reclining seats in Business Class offer the best conditions for enjoying the entertainment program.

In addition to scheduled flights, seasonal charter flights are also offered. These go mainly to popular holiday destinations in South America, the Caribbean and the Canary Islands. This makes the airline a popular holiday airline in Finland.

Cheap flights are possible with Finnair to Europe, North America and Asia plus Australia. South America and Africa are not included in the flight schedule. Important destinations in Europe are London, Stockholm, Berlin and Moscow. In Asia, Beijing, Delhi and Bangkok served. There is also a dense domestic route network. Finnair Baggage Allowance

Carry-on baggage

If you want to fly with Finnair on vacation or to a business appointment, you should first take a closer look at the baggage regulations. For example, as a Finnair passenger traveling in Business Class or with a Finnair Plus membership card with either Platinum, Gold or Silver status, you can carry two pieces of luggage with a maximum total weight of exactly 10 kg on all connections. All other passengers are authorized to take a piece of luggage weighing up to 8 kg on board. The luggage may not exceed the total dimensions of 56 cm x 45 cm x 25 cm. The same rules apply to children as to adults, provided that a separate seat has been booked for them.

Checked baggage

When checking in luggage, please note that the total dimensions of the luggage to be checked in at check-in must not exceed 158 cm on all flights. In Economy Class, one piece of luggage up to 23 kg can be carried on all connections (exception: the booking class Economy Light), in the other classes or with a corresponding membership card, there are two or three pieces of luggage weighing 23 kg each. Infants in all classes can always carry a piece of luggage weighing 23 kg.

Other luggage

If you want to take sports equipment or musical instruments on Finnair’s plane, you should note that you may have to register beforehand. If the special baggage exceeds the number of pieces of baggage included in the baggage allowance, but not the weight of 23 kg, a fee of 10 to 60 euros will be charged depending on the route. Heavy luggage of this type can become significantly more expensive, but this also depends heavily on the flight connection.

The prices for seats differ depending on the route, flight and seat category and are displayed individually in the booking process. There is a choice of window seats, places for quick boarding and alighting and seats with more legroom. If you do not reserve a seat, you will automatically receive a free seat when you check in.

Finnair Knee Distance
