About Druk Air
The state-owned airline Druk Air of the small Himalayan country of Bhutan uses Paro airport as its headquarters and hub. The location of the Kingdom of Bhutan in the Himalayas made air traffic difficult for a long time until Paro Airport was opened in 1968. Initially it was flown to by Indian helicopters, and from 1978 onwards by small aircraft that flew from there to Calcutta, India.
Druk Air was finally founded in April 1981 on the initiative of the royal family and began flight operations in 1983 with two Dornier aircraft. The company introduced scheduled flights to Calcutta and Dhaka. In 1988 machines of the type BAe 146-100 were added, with which routes to Kathmandu, Bangkok and New Delhi could be taken up. Druk Air has been flying with two Airbus A319-100s since October 2004. In 2012 another Druk Air machine was ordered from the manufacturer. The plan is to expand the range of scheduled flights to include a route to Hong Kong. In 2012 Druk Air has five aircraft: three Airbus A319-100, one Airbus A320neo and one ATR 42. Druk Air is neither part of an alliance nor is it part of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
The airline’s website allows both current flight schedules to be viewed and online bookings to be made. Although passengers cannot use a bonus program, they can benefit from various discounts at times. Druk Air also sometimes offers particularly cheap flights.
