About Cubana de Aviación
Cubana de Aviacion is the national airline of Cuba, based in Havana. La Cubana de Aviacion was founded on October 8, 1929 under the name of Compañía Cubana de Aviación Curtiss. Pan Am bought Cubana in 1932 just two years after starting flight operations. In 1944 Pan Am deleted the Curtiss suffix. In 1945 several Cuban investors acquired shares in Cubana; Pan Am held 42 percent. In 1946, Cubana flew to Miami for the first time, an international destination. In 1948 the airline was able to fly from Havana to Madrid. In 1954, Pan Am separated from its shares. Nevertheless, the cooperation with Cubana was maintained until 1959, so that New York and Miami could be served daily.
The nationalization of the airline in the course of the Cuban Revolution brought about the name change to Empresa Consolidada Cubana de Aviación and the suspension of the flight routes between Cuba and the USA. Only Soviet planes were now considered for the fleet: Ilyushin and Anatov. From the mid-1970s, the route network could be expanded to include various international destinations – such as Prague, Mexico City and Berlin. The better economic situation in Cuba from 2000 onwards enabled more careful fleet maintenance and the purchase of three new Tupolev Tu-204 and two Ilyushin II-96-300s. From 2007 Cubana leased an Airbus A320-232, among other things. Three new Anatow An-158s were purchased in 2013.
Cubana remains the only company to serve Santiago de Cuba. She is both a member and co-founder of the IATA (International Air Transport Association) association and also belongs to SITA (International Aeronautical Telecommunications Company) and ALTA (Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association).Air Caraïbes signed a codeshare agreement with Cubana de Aviacion in August 2016. Following new US sanctions against Cuba, the airline suspended its flights to the West Indies. Cubana de Aviación S.A. is considered to be the most important Cuban airline that not only transports passengers but also mail and freight. In 2020, the airline’s fleet comprised 17 aircraft, which were on average 13.1 years old.
