About Biman Bangladesh Airlines
The state-owned Biman Bangladesh Airlines was founded on January 4th, 1972, and Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is the home airport and hub at the same time. The airline is based in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka. The first flights were carried out with a Douglas DC-3, which was donated by the Bengali armed forces and which originated from World War II. With the subsequent acquisition of a Boeing 707 and a Fokker F-27, Biman Bangladesh Airlines was also able to serve international destinations. In the course of time, other aircraft such as the Fokker F-28, Airbus A310-330 and McDonnel Douglas DC-10 were added, although the latter has since been taken out of service.
The company’s efforts were crowned in 1989 with the reception of the millionth passenger. The Bangladeshi company also improved its customer service by setting up a computerized reservation system the same year. The 1990s and 2000s were marked by the renewal of the fleet and the expansion of the air network. Due to financial difficulties, several international flights had to be suspended in 2006 and the purchase of new aircraft had to be postponed.
From 2008 onwards, Biman Bangladesh Airlines went up a bit again, so that an order for 4 Boeing 777-300ERs and Boeing 787-8s could be placed, but not all of them remained in the company’s possession. In November 2011 the existing aircraft fleet got a new color scheme, at the same time the in-flight service was expanded for the first time by equipping the passengers with electronic devices. At the present time, Biman Bangladesh Airlines has a fleet of 18 aircraft with an average age of 7.3 years. It has an attractive frequent flyer program called the Loyalty Club ready for its passengers.
