Avianca is a Colombian airline and flag carrier in the South American country. Avianca is based in the capital Bogotá. Avianca is not only the largest airline in Colombia to date, but also the oldest airline on the American continents and the second oldest in the world (first KLM). In fact, the company also has German roots: in 1919 the airline was founded by the German Werner Krämer, among others, as SCADTA – an abbreviation for “Sociedad Colombo Alemana de Transporte Aéreo”, which literally means Colombian-German society for air transport. The company’s first flight, which takes place between the cities of Barranquilla and Puerto Colombia. In September 1921, the first regular flights started. Subsequently, in 1940, Pan American Airways, which bought the company in 1931, merged with the Servicio Aereo Colombiano. It is the birth of Avianca.
In 1954, the company bought SAETA and on June 3, 1955, it created Helicol, a helicopter company. Avianca, SAM Colombia and Helicol created an alliance to gain market share in 1994. Then, in 2002, Avianca and SAM joined their rival, ACES Colombia. The alliance nevertheless ended 18 months later and resulted in the disappearance of ACES.
In 2004, the airline joined a Brazilian conglomerate, Synergy Group. In 2009, it merged with Taca International Airlines, allowing the group to become the second largest airline group in Latin America. The company joined Star Alliance in 2012.
After Brazil and Ecuador, Avianca opens a branch in Argentina in 2017. In 2019, the Colombian company launches Avianca Express which provides domestic connections. On the model of low-cost airlines, the national subsidiary carries out “point-to-point” connections rather than passing through airport connection platforms.
Avianca has been awarded several times as the best airline in South America. One of the basic principles is to connect people in the Spanish-speaking world and to represent Colombia externally. Security, flexibility, friendliness and commitment are self-evident company principles. There are usually two on-board classes: the business and the tourist class. Service on board includes a large selection of menus and modern entertainment technologies. Every passenger on long-haul flights has a small monitor on which they can watch films. The frequent flyer program is called Lifemiles. Rewards include ticket upgrades and free entry to the VIP lounges. The airline even offers entire vacation packages under the name Avianca Tours.
On May 10, 2020, the airline declared bankruptcy, seriously affected by the Covid-19. It thus seeks to restructure its economy.
