About Avianca Ecuador
Founded in 1986, Avianca Ecuador is an Ecuadorian airline company that operates from Mariscal Sucre and José-Joaquin-de-Olmedo international airports to 10 domestic and international destinations. When it was founded in 1986, Aerogal carried passengers and cargo between Ecuador and the Galapagos. It rose to prominence in 1990, after the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC) granted it an air carrier license. The first private company to be authorized to fly to Baltra Island in 2003, it also obtained in May 2006 authorization from the Civil Aviation Bureau to serve the Caribbean-South America region and to North America.
The company’s development intensified in April 2010 with the announcement of its acquisition by Synergy Group, the South American conglomerate that owns Avianca TACA Holdings. In October, the process of integrating Aerogal and VIP Ecuador into Avianca began. It restructured itself by suspending its flights to New York, before completely leaving the American market in April 2012, by reducing its staff by 10 % and by launching a Guayaquil / Cali line on October 23, 2012. Avianca, TACA, Aerogal and Tampa Cargo finally adopted the Avianca trade name in May 2013. In 2014, the company began to operate under the name Avianca Ecuador. In 2020, Avianca Ecuador’s parent company, Avianca Holdings, is going under creditors protection due to the coronavirus crisis in an attempt not to risk bankruptcy. To date, Avianca Ecuador serves 10 destinations with a fleet of 8 aircraft.
