About Atlantic Airways
Atlantic Airways is based in Sorvagur and was founded on November 10, 1987. The company was initially part of the Danish Cimber Air, but is now 100 percent owned by the Faroese state. Atlantic Airways started its first flight on March 28, 1988. Since 1994, in addition to its international flights with four BAe 146-200s, the airline has also operated domestic flights on local helicopter routes. The helicopter service existed earlier, however, since 1984. However, it previously belonged to the local shipping company Strandfaraskip Landsins.
Atlantic Airways has also been flying to Iceland and Denmark since 1995. In cooperation with Icelandair, Greenland and Narsarsuag will also be served in the summer. The line to Aberdeen, on the other hand, has existed since 1998 and Oslo was added in 2002. Furthermore Atlantic Airways has been the only airline to fly to the Faroe Islands since November 1st, 2004. However, on May 15, 2006, FaroeJet, a Faroese rival company, started operations. In the summer of 2006, Atlantic Airways flew to the Shetland Islands for the first time and also offered an onward flight to London. Stavanger in Norway and Aalborg in Denmark have also been added.
In 2007, when Atlantic Airways went public, the government privatized a third of the company but failed to sell another third the following year due to the global financial crisis. He then joined the managers of Atlantic Airways and announced in February 2014 his intention to renationalize the company. To accommodate the new Airbus A 319, Vágar airport extended its airstrip by 279 meters in December 2011. In June 2015, the company welcomed Johanna a Bergi as its head, making it the first woman to head a Nordic company.
Nowadays, Atlantic Airways is the only airline in the Faroe Islands. Its helicopters operate domestic flights, while its planes connect 9 international destinations. Over time, the airline has increased its fleet and today it operates with a fleet of 4 aircraft. Atlantic Airways is not part of an alliance, but offers customers the Súlubonus frequent flyer program to save on cheap flights.
