Founded in 1996, it was in November 1998 that Air Tahiti Nui made, with its only plane, its first flight from Papeete to Los Angeles. Two days later, the airline flew to Tokyo. In 2000, Air Tahiti Nui continued to expand its air network and launched a weekly service to Osaka, then Auckland. In May 2002, thanks to the acquisition of a new aircraft and service to Paris, Air Tahiti Nui positioned itself on the European market. In January and February 2003, Air Tahiti Nui acquired two new Airbus’es. It was in June 2005 that the airline bought its fifth plane. In July of that same year, Air Tahiti Nui opened a new route connecting New York to Sydney via Tahiti. With a fleet of five aircraft, it offers frequent flights between Tahiti and major international cities.

Since 2009, Air Tahiti Nui has partnered with SNCF within TGV AIR. Travelers can now depart from the provinces by TGV to reach their departure airport.In 2018, Air Tahiti Nui created its first subsidiary, Tahiti Nui Helicopters. In 2019, Air Tahiti Nui was recognized as a “Large 5-star company” in the official APEX classification, proof of the excellence of its services. In 2020, it has a fleet of four Boeing Dreamliners B787-9 which allows it to provide flights to 4 cities in the world. On March 15, 2020, the airline made the longest domestic flight in aeronautical history, connecting Papeete to Paris non-stop on an exceptional basis due to the coronavirus.

Air Tahiti Nui also offers its passengers a frequent flyer program, Club Tiare. French Polynesia holds a 61.7 percent stake in the airline. Air Tahiti Nui is also owned by various local investors. To check in at the airport, check the closing times of the check-in counter on the Air Tahiti Nui website. If you are not at the airport in time, you will not be able to board the plane and you will lose all your rights on the purchased flight ticket.

Air Tahiti Nui Baggage Allowance

Carry-on baggage

Every Air Tahiti Nui passenger (aged 2 and over) is allowed to carry ten kilograms of hand luggage, which must not be larger than 56 x 36 x 23 centimeters (115 centimeters in circumference). Children under two years of age without a seat reservation are not entitled to the baggage allowance. In addition to hand luggage, passengers may take another personal item on board, such as a handbag, camera, laptop or baby food if required.

Checked baggage

One piece of baggage weighing 23 kilograms (two for Club Tiare members) and two pieces of 32 kilograms each (three for Club Tiare members) are allowed in Poerava Business Class. Babies without their own seat are allowed to check in ten kilograms of luggage, as well as a carrier bag, a child seat or a buggy. The same rules apply to children and babies with their own seat as to adults. Each piece of luggage must not be larger than 158 centimeters (height + length + width). Additional luggage (up to 23 kg) can be checked in for a fee. Oversized luggage, up to 32 kg, can also be transported for a fee, everything that goes beyond this must be transported and registered as freight.

Other luggage

Passengers can check in one additional item of luggage weighing a maximum of 23 kilograms free of charge. However, this may only include golf, diving or surfing equipment.

The purchase of a plane ticket with Air Tahiti Nui includes various services such as luggage, meals, snacks and drinks or a comfort kit. The airline also offers an additional baggage of up to 23 kg to travelers with sports equipment. Passengers have several travel classes. The Poerava Business Class offers a 152 cm pitch, a 40 cm HD touch screen or a 180° reclining seat. Passengers in the Moana Premium Class will benefit from a 97 cm pitch, a 33 cm HD touch screen and a USB port.
