About Air Niugini
Air Niugini is the largest airline in Papua New Guinea, an island nation in the Pacific. Air Niugini is based in the capital Port Moresby. The word Niugini comes from the Creole language Tok Pisin and means Papua New Guina. The airline was founded in 1973 and initially operated exclusively national flights. Commercial operations began in earnest in November 1973, with the launch of the first flight to Rabaul. At that time, Air Niugini was equipped with a fleet of 8 aircraft (Fokker F27 and DC3). After a year, the company has already transported 350,000 passengers. In 1975, Air Niugini acquired two new Fokker F27s and opened up internationally. Brisbane, Manila and Honk Kong join the network. Four years later, in 1979, Honolulu and Singapore complete the offer.
After buying out the shares of Qantas and TAA in 1976, it acquired those of Ansett. The government became fully owner of Air Niugini in 1980. The company acquired its first Airbus 300 in 1984. It was not until 2002 that it received its first Boeing 767. The company extended its offer in April 2008, with the entry into service of the Sydney-Port Moresby route. The new flight crew uniforms were presented in September 2010. The following year, an interline agreement was signed with Air France and KLM. Air Niugini acquired its first Boeing 737 in July 2012 and has been offering its customers online check-in since 2013. Since November 2015, the company has had IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) certification. With a fleet of 19 aircraft, it serves 39 domestic and international destinations.
Air Niugini logo is a red bird of paradise that reflects the exoticism of Papua New Guinea. Frequent flyers have the option to join the Executive Club. For an annual fee, passengers can acquire many privileges in this way, e.g. priority check-in and access to the lounges, also known as executive clubs. The latest telecommunications media are available in the lounges. You can also relax there and enjoy a small snack. The airline does not have its own frequent flyer program. However, miles can be earned on long-haul flights through the Qantas program. Air Niugini is not represented in any aviation association.
