About Air Koryo
In 1950, the airline Air Koryo was founded in North Korea as the state airline SOKAO as a Soviet-North Korean joint venture. The airline was operated with Soviet personnel and Soviet aircraft. The company that followed SOKAO was the airline Chosŏn Minhang. It was founded in 1954 and renamed Air Koryo (JS) in 1993. As a national airline, the airline is subordinate to the Office for Civil Aviation, which is part of the North Korean Air Force. All aircraft are operated by army officers as pilots.
Air Koryo is based in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea. The airline uses Sunan Airport as its hub, which is the capital’s commercial airport and is located around 24 kilometers north of Pyongyang. On September 21, 1955, the airline Air Koryo began its flight service. The first domestic flight routes were Pyongyang-Chongiji and Pyongyang Hamhung. The international flight routes Pyongyang-Moscow, Pyongyang-Sofia and Pyongyang-Berlin were served with an Ilyushin II-62M once a week from the late 1950s to the mid 1990s. Air Koryo does not belong to any alliance and does not offer its passengers a frequent flyer program.

The airline expanded its flight network and now also serves intercontinental flights to other destinations in Europe. The state airline has been subject to European sanctions against North Korea since 2006, which mean that Air Koryo is no longer allowed to serve European destinations. However, the ban was relaxed again in 2010.
