About Air Greenland
Greenland’s national airline, Air Greenland, is based in Nuuk. Air Greenland was founded as Greenlandair in November 1960. The company was a consortium of Kryolitselskaet and SAS Scandinavian Airlines. The country of Denmark itself and the governments of the Danish province of Greenland participated in the airline, which is based in Nuuk, just two years later. The airline Air Greenland received its current name Air Greenland in 2002. Air Greenland’s home airport is Nuuk Airport, which is only about 4 kilometers northeast of the city of Nuuk. The airline’s first wide-body aircraft was a Boeing 757-200, which served the route from Narsarsuaq to Copenhagen. The aircraft was named Kunuunnguaq, which was the nickname of the Greenland-Danish polar researcher and ethnologist Knud Rasmussen. In 2003, the Airbus A330-200 “Norsaq”, another jet-powered aircraft, was added to the fleet. From April 2010 the flight operations of the Boeing 757-200 ceased.
In 2020, the Air Greenland fleet consists of 1 Airbus A330-200 and 7 Bombardier Dash 8Q-200. The Airbus A330-200 is mainly used for long-haul flights to Scandinavia. The airline Air Greenland also has a fleet of helicopters consisting of Bell 212s, Eurocopter AS 350s and Sikorsky S-61s. In the growing interest of its passengers and customers, Air Greenland also offers freight transport and charter flights.
