About Air Austral
The French private airline Air Austral has its headquarters in Saint-Denis. Saint-Denis is the capital of the French island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean. The home airport is Réunion International Airport – Aéroport de La Réunion Roland Garros – which is also the airline’s hub. The airline Air Austral was founded in 1974 by Gérard Ethève under the name Réunion Air Service in Saint Denis. In August 1977, the company opened its first medium-haul line between Reunion Island and Mayotte. Renamed Air Réunion in 1986, the company finally took its final name in 1990, when it acquired a stake in Air France.
After acquiring several Boeing 737s, the company increased its medium-haul flights in the Indian Ocean and then ended up connecting Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle airport in 2003. From 2005 to 2007, connections to France continued to operate expand, with flights to Marseille, Lyon and Toulouse, with two weekly flights. In 2008, Air Austral bought 49% of the shares in the company Catovair, later renamed Air Mascareignes. In 2009, the company opened the Paris / Sydney and Paris / Nouméa lines, via Réunion. In 2011, it served a direct flight to Bordeaux and Nantes and since 2015 a link between Reunion Island and Guangzhou as well as Saint-Pierre and Rodrigues. Finally, the Paris-Mayotte line opened in 2016.

Air Austral flies to various domestic and international destinations from its hub, Réunion Airport. Air Austral offers its passengers the possibility of checking in online. This online check-in is available from 24 hours and up to 1 hour before flight departure. Air Austral Baggage Allowance
Each traveler is allowed to bring one piece of hand luggage (the dimensions must not exceed 115 centimeters) and one personal item. The maximum weight of hand luggage is ten kilograms. Small children are also allowed to carry ten kilograms of hand luggage. The baggage should be labeled with the passenger’s name on the outside and inside.
The checked baggage must not exceed 300 centimeters in size. On international flights (routes between Reunion and France / Perth / Thailand), 25 kilograms of luggage can be carried in the Loisirs class, 35 kilograms in the Comfort class and 40 kilograms as a member of the Austral Club. On regional flights, 25 kilograms are allowed in the Loisirs class, 30 kilograms in the Comfort class and 40 kilograms as a member of the Austral Club. One piece of luggage must never weigh more than 32 kg, from / to Thailand the limit is 30 kg.
Diving and golf equipment up to 20 kilograms can be transported free of charge at Air Austral. Equipment over 20 kg and all other items of luggage are charged per kilogram. For surfboards and bicycles, however, there is a flat rate, which is between 20 and 75 euros (depending on weight and flight).
