About Aigle Azur
Aigle Azur (ZI) was founded in Tremblay-en-France in 1946, making it the oldest privately owned airline in France. Aigle Azur made its first flights to Lebanon, Tunisia and Indochina. In 1955, the company was sold to the UAT group, then reconstituted in 1970 as a regional airline under the name Lucas Aviation. This company, based at Pontoise airport, would later become Lucas Aigle Azur, before taking over the definitive name of Aigle Azur.
In 2001, it was finally bought by the French group GoFast, specializing in air transport. This acquisition marks the extension of Aigle Azur’s regular flights to North Africa and the Mediterranean, starting with Algeria in 2001, then Morocco and Tunisia in 2006. It then extended its services to Portugal and the Mali. The year 2012 was marked by the arrival of Hainan Airlines, which acquired nearly 48% of the company’s capital. In 2019, Aigle Azur offers nearly 21 regular destinations departing from Paris Orly and several provincial towns, as well as numerous charter flights. But in August 2019, various shareholders publicly dispute the management of the airline, weighed down by financial difficulties. The financial situation worsened at the beginning of September when Aigle Azur found itself in default of payment.
Since its foundation, Aigle Azur has successfully positioned itself in North Africa, where it handles the resettlement of French teachers from Tunisia during the school holidays. The company continued to expand its fleet and range of travel destinations, opening the first routes to Morocco and Lebanon and has a subsidiary in Indochina. Aigle Azur was currently the second largest French airline. Frequent flyers can earn miles and receive discounts with the Azur Plus program. Aigle Azur owns Airbus A319-100, A320-200 and A321-200 aircraft.
