Afriqiyah Airways About Afriqiyah Airways

Afriqiyah Airways is a Libyan airline, founded in March 2001 under the leadership of the then leader, Colonel Muammar Kadhafi. The company is 100% owned by the Libyan state, which wants to make Afriqiyah Airways a company that embodies Pan-Africanism. The airline is part of the Arab Air Carriers Organization. The first logo on the aircraft in the form of the date 9.9.99 was quite idiosyncratic. This date indicated the establishment of the African Union, brought into being by the former Libyan revolutionary leader Gaddafi. The aim was to see Afriqiyah Airways not just as a Libyan airline, but as a pan-African airline.

As of December 1, 2001, Afriqiyah Airways provides regular services. In 2002, it began to fly in major European cities (Paris and Brussels in 2002, Geneva in 2003, London in 2004, Amsterdam in 2006). Until 2011, the company grew and served more than twenty countries.

Due to the civil war in Libya and the no-fly zone imposed by the UN, no more flights could be carried out from 2011. Several aircrafts were damaged in the fighting. Limited domestic air traffic could only be resumed at the end of 2011. The civil aviation authorities in the EU raised significant safety concerns in 2012 with all Libyan airlines. So that Afriqiyah Airways would not be included in the list of banned EU airspace, the airline decided to forego air traffic to the EU of its own accord until the end of 2012. Extensive reforms, a new logo and a corporate design were also introduced. In July 2014, many Afriqiyah Airways planes were destroyed in fighting by rival militias. In 2014, for safety reasons, Afriqiyah Airways was registered on the European Union’s black list and banned from flying in European airspace. This ban greatly reduces the number of destinations served by the company.

In 2019, it serves 14 destinations, mainly in Africa. However, the company intends to bounce back and in 2018 it was elected 9th best regional airline in Africa at the Skytrax World Airline Awards ceremony. In addition to friendly service, Afriqiyah Airways offers its guests a frequent flyer program for the Arabian region. This is called RAHAL and contains accumulated airline miles and points that can be exchanged for goods and services.
